Perform Incomplete Recovery Until Sequence # and Thread # Using Rman in 10g and 11g

  1. First Database in Archivelog Mode.
  2. Take Rman Backup.
    •  Rman > Backup Database;
  3. Switch Log files.
  4. Delete Some Archive logs.
  5. I am doing complete recovery that time i have got an error.
  6. Show error message.
    •  RMAN-06025: no backup of log thread 1 seq 16 lowscn 834655 found to restore  
 RMAN-06025: no backup of log thread 1 seq 15 lowscn 834304 found to restore
  7. Some Archivelog is missing that time incomplete recovery is done.
  8. Go to Rman Window and run the following command.
    •  run   
    {   
      Shutdown Immediate   
      Startup Mount   
      Set Until Sequence 15 Thread 1;   
      Restore Database;   
      Recover Database;   
      Alter Database Open Resetlogs;   
    }
  9. Database only Restore sequence number 15 and after 15 and 16 sequence no all Archivelogs are available but these Archivelogs are not recoverable these all data are lost. 
    Incomplete recovery is very Dangerous.

Connect to sys using sqlplus in admin command prompt Check whether your database is in archive log mode or not. Run command ARCHIVE LOG LIST. It will show you the following details: It is always preferable to have your database in archive log mode. The reason being if your database is in archive log mode you can recover from all committed changes in the event of an OS or disk failure. This query will display the path of redo log files, their group and their status. It is always recommended to have a minimum of two members in one group. As you can see I have only 1 member in group 6 whose current status is INACTIVE. I intentionally have 1 member to generate a scenario for the sake of this practical. Now go to the specified path where the redo log member of group 6 is located and open it in a notepad. It will show some symbolic data.
